Best Dedicated ASP.NET Hosting in Ireland - Anyone?
Does anyone have any recommendations for a dedicated (Windows Server 2003) hosting provider in Ireland?

We have a number of sites and services hosted at different locations around the world which we would now like to consolidate on a single machine which is fully under our control.

I am particularly interested in comments concerning your experience with levels of support in terms of general reliability, incident response times and general competence. Price is obviously important also. :)

Regards,

Marcus

Marcus my experience with Irish hosting is quite extensive and I can say most of the time catastrophic :-)

The main issue I found is that many hosters here are Linux/Unix hosters converted to some extent to Microsoft. But the lack of support, the lack of understanding .Net make me thing everything is sadly better abroad.

They dare here to propose windows 2003 hosting with PHP and MySQL (.Net as an option) :-(

UKHosting, Tollon.Net are some names I can think about. The best of the best is for me OrcsWeb with a support center open 24 h/7 days. I remembered I was stuck on some SQL deployment issues at 2 in the morning, and called them. Immediate answer, immediate solution.

Avoid Host.ie :-)

And if you are really looking to keep everything in Ireland, I would say Eircom. Even if they don't have a good reputation in different things, they can also provide dedicated hosting and they are reliable.

Something that I realised recently is that   search "pages from Ireland" looks at the IP address of the domain in order to determine the country.

If you have sites with TLDs like .com or .biz and these are hosted outside of Ireland, Google.ie's search "pages from Ireland" will not include them in the results.

Hey Marcus,

I'm not aware of any in Ireland but we use DediPower (www.dedipower.co.uk) for our dedicated machines and they are excellent. Their support is fast and efficient too.

At this point I'm looking at buying a 1U Windows 2003 Web Edition server with 250GB SATA H/W Raid 1 (cost ~€3,000) and co-locating it at a data centre and supporting the box ourselves. I'm sick of having to explain in detail to ISP support engineers what they need to do to fix problems. Might as well do it ourselves anyway!

http://www.blacknight.ie/1u-colocation.0.html  have a €99 per month offering (hosted at DataElectronics) which may be suitable for our needs especially when you consider the savings we should make from consolidating the many sites (and their individual charges) we have out there.

Has anyone heard of http://www.Blacknight.ie  ? The sales guy sounded friendly enough on the phone... for what that's worth. :)

The problem Marcus, is that dedicated or not you still have to go through a support engineer to fix some stuff. I looked at the offers by Blacknight, seems interesting at a first glance, but if you look at their main page, they are again more PHP MySQl company, like many Irish hosters.
We suffer in Ireland to not have a good OrcsWeb equivalent, some place where they clearly anoounced their commitment for .NET on their home page.

Just my two cents :-)

Thanks Paschal, but my understanding from speaking to Blacknight this monring (please correct me if I'm wrong here) is that with a co-located server (as opposed to a dedicated server), they are not involved in any admin of the server at all. We supply and administer the box either remotely or on-site.

They (Blacknight) merely administer the network related issues such as firewall, DNS, IP address allocation and other connectivity related stuff. In addition they may require a member of their staff to be present during site access (depending on the competence of the engineer we send...).

The data centre also provides staff which can perform simple tasks like hard-reboots etc, but these requests must be relayed via Blacknight...

Let me know if got it wrong. :)

Someone better defend Irish hosting companies. I'm with dbahost.ie hosting out of the National Software Centre in Cork. Most hosting companies will give you a good colocation deal and €99pm is fairly competitive. It makes sense to go locally for colo seeing as you got to get the server into the data centre and may need to access it in the event of a hardware fault etc.

If you require managed hosting (dedicated or shared) then you other issues come into play. You should look at the competencies of the hosting provider prior to choosing them, look for references etc., emphasise your technical requirements and explain the criticality of your application rather than just trying to get it on a server at the lowest price. You will invariably get a better price by hosting abroad where the economies of scale often lead to lower ISP services costs. By staying closer to home you will at least be able to pass judgement on your hosting provider by checking out recommendations, developer networks etc. You can also get support during normal working hours. If your applications are predominantly US based and you require support at 2am Irish time then it may be best to go with someone over there.

There are enough Irish hosting companies to satisfy most people. At dbahost.ie we specialise in Oracle, Coldfusion, JSP as well as dot net, php, mysql, sqlserver, mail services etc. Other companies have their own specialist areas.

I've found hosting365.com to be reasonable enough for ASP.NET hosting. I'm only using them for a small (non-business) site, but I've no complaints.

Regards,
Martin.

Hi all,

We are Ireland's largest hosting provider - http://www.hosting365.ie

We are a Microsoft Partner, have 5 MCSE (minimum) staff and lots of them with development experience in .NET.

We provide shared .NET hosting from € 12.95 per month, reseller plans allowing you to resell the plans, and dedicated servers and colocation.

A 1U server colocated is € 79.95 per month, or for € 99.95 per month we'll provide a dedicated server for you to run your own copy of Windows 2003 Server.

Hope that helps!
Stephen
